"Changes in Fertility Rates of Schizophrenic Patients in New York State"
Marital and reproductive rates of two samples of schizophrenic patients, admitted to New York state hospitals in 1934-36 and in 1954-56, were compared for the purpose of assessing changes related to the introduction of new treatment and care. The reproductive trends are discussed in the context of their long- and short-range implications for population genetics, behavioral evolution, and community problems.

Co-authored by Erlenmeyer-Kimling, Nicol, Rainer, and Deming, this 12-page article is based on a paper read at the Third International Congress of Human Genetics, Chicago, September 1966, and appeared in the American Journal of Psychiatry 125:7, January 1969. This work was supported by a Public Health Service Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health and by a grant from the Scottish Rite Committee on Research in Schizophrenia.
